Chefs Antony Worrall Thompson and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall have added their weight to calls to save fish stocks.

The pair yesterday hit out at destructive fishing policies which threaten to take some seafood off menus, criticising fisheries companies, which look set to ignore calls for a ban on some stocks.

"Destructive policies have massively damaged the UK's marine environment,” Thompson told the Daily Mirror. "If this mismanagement goes on there will be no fish left. I don't know any recipes for jelly fish."

Whittingstall added: "Soon cod and chips will have to be imported. We can't catch enough cod off our coast for fishermen to make a living."

The Council for the Exploration of the Sea has already called for a cod ban in the North Sea, while foodservice company Charlton House yesterday renewed calls for contract caterers to ban cod from their menus in a bid to save stocks.
