School Food Trust launches Children's Food Trust

The School Food Trust has launched a new community interest company called the Children's Food Trust (CFT) in a bid to grow its work.

The charity, formerly a non-departmental public body for the Department for Education, is working with social enterprise the CFT, which was created to share the SFT's vision that all children have the balanced diet, cooking skills and food education they need to reach their full potential.

Rob Rees, chairman, said the new social enterprise, which will be launched at the inaugural Children's Food Conference in March 2012, was created to meet growing demand.

"Our years of experience of improving school lunchtimes for children, setting up the country's largest network of healthy school cooking clubs and of leading internationally-recognised research all mean that our support is now in demand on other children's food issues," he explained.

"What children learn about food as they grow up - right from their very early years through their school career and beyond - has a huge impact for their health, wellbeing and achievement as adults, and so for all of us as taxpayers.

"There are still far too many ways in which good food is not being used to help children reach their potential, and that's where we know we can help."
