Gidleigh Park

Michael Caines’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant Gidleigh Park has been named the best in Britain by online booking service Toptable.

The restaurant in Chagford, Devon, won glowing reviews from the website’s members who praised its “amazing food” and "faultless service”.

Caines said he was “delighted” to have won the award: “It is always satisfying to receive recognition and praise, but it is particularly gratifying that the impartial views and ratings of Toptable users, our diners, have positioned us so highly.”

In the celebrity chef category Restaurant Martin Wishart in Edinburgh won the top spot beating off competition from top London chefs including Michel Roux Jr of Le Gavroche (2), Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester (5), Gordon Ramsay at Claridges (7) and Tom Aikens (9).

Britain’s favourite cuisine was voted to be Italian, with Indian food in second and French in third place. While British cuisine came in fourth position, English cuisine came in tenth.
