Camra calls for communities to fight local pub closures

New figures from the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) have revealed that community pubs are closing at an unprecedented rate.

The research, which coincides with Camra’s Community Pubs Week (17 – 24 February) found that 56 pubs a month are closed permanently – 80% of which are in urban locations. It said that more than 1,300 pubs nationwide are currently under threat from closure.

The figures have prompted Camra to call for communities to rally behind their local pub.

Chief executive Mike Benner said: “Across the UK currently, a sword hangs over more than 1,300 pubs and falls on an average of 56 a month, depriving communities of a vital hub forever.”

He added that much of the pressure in urban locations was due to the high demand for housing and the conversion of many pubs into restaurants, shops and offices.

Camra is now campaigning for pubs to be placed in a separate ‘Use Class’ to other retail businesses to help close the legal loophole allowing developers to demolish pubs without planning permission. It is also calling for all new large housing developments to include provisions for a pub.

Benner added: “Pubs are a meeting point for friends, neighbours, local groups, charities and sports teams. There simply is nothing to replace a well run pub and yet they are being lost at this incredible rate.”
