Calderdale country inn on the market

The White Lion

The leasehold on an historic West Yorkshire riverside inn has been placed on the market.

The beer garden of the White Lion hotel overlooks Hebden Water in the stone-built country town of Hebdenn Bridge in Calderdale.

The country inn serves as a central base for visitors to the region, which is crossed by the Calderdale Way, the Pennine Way and the Rochdale Canal.

The property was built in 1657 as a hostelry serving the river crossing. In the 18th and 19th centuries it became an important coaching inn on the Halifax-to-Rochdale stagecoach route.

It retains a number of period features such as exposed beams, mullion windows, and a stone fireplace with spirals carved on either side, which is an old local charm against fire.

The inn - which is renowned for its breakfasts - offers 10 en-suite bedrooms which all carry a four Star Inn rating. It can seat 62 customers across the bar and snug and another 35 in the restaurant.

The detached stone property also contains a first floor function room for 50 delegates, a three-bedroom owners’ flat and a separate one-bedroom flat.

The Leeds office of Christie + Co is inviting offers of £175,000 for the lease, which runs to September 2013.
