Sophisticated sausages are bringing the banger back into fashion, a new report has found.
Sausages have seen a 23% increase in market value since 2000, with sales forecast at £530m this year, according to market analyst Mintel.
That roughly translates as Britain eating its way through 189 tonnes of sausages this year, or 140 chipolatas each.
The increase has been attributed to sausage makers going upmarket with better quality meat and a wider range of ingredients, such as duck and orange.
David Bird, Mintel’s consumer analyst, said: “Manufacturers today are reinventing sausages as posh nosh with quality-led production, after the association with mechanically recovered meat tarnished the perception of this humble British staple.”
What with two-out-of-five adults opting for British sausages where possible, it looks like the British banger is here to stay.
