Glasgow school caterer Cordia launches food hut at Holyrood Secondary

Glasgow's school catering provider Cordia has launched the city's first external bespoke food kiosk at Holyrood Secondary School.

Named the Holyrood Hut, the unit was officially opened today at the south side secondary school by Cordia chair Councillor Jim Mackechnie, alongside head teacher Tom McDonald.

A range of hot and cold food that meets Scottish Government legislation on nutrition is available at the kiosk. It is hoped that it will not only offer healthier food alternatives to high-street snack vans, fast-food outlets and chip shops, but help encourage pupils to stay within the school premises during their breaks.

Julia McCreadie, Cordia's operations manager, said that the idea for the unit was generated during a consultation with the school.

"It is just one of many new initiatives Cordia has introduced in recent years to make Fuel Zone school catering more appealing to Glasgow's secondary pupils while ensuring the food provided is both nutritious and popular," she explained.

All of Glasgow's 30 secondary schools have now introduced one or more new catering concepts following consultation with pupils. These include mobile counters, snack and drink "vendbanks" and fixed coffee bars.

The changes have resulted in a sales increase of up to 20% within some schools.
