Premier Inn goes green with greywater system

Wednesday 05 December 2007 08:00

Premier Inn has become one of the first hotel chains to install an environmentally friendly greywater recovery system, at their newest hotel in Doncaster.

The system takes used bath and shower water – greywater – and puts it through an intensive treatment process before storing it and recycling it to flush toilets. The Doncaster Premier Inn, which opened in August, is using 19% less water every day since its installation.

Helen Page, senior account executive for Premier Inn, said: “We definitely plan to install it in all of our new buildings if it carries on working successfully. It’s been much more successful than we expected.”

Due to potential health risks, the required standards for treating greywater are very high under EU guidelines, and it is more expensive than using fresh water. But it is a good method of saving water.

Tracey Wright, environmental manager for Whitbread, who own Premier Inn, said: “This is just one of the environmental initiatives that the company has implemented in recent months, on their journey to improve their environmental impact.  We know that we can do more, but we are moving in the right direction."
