Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises (S&NPE) has published an environmental policy aimed at reducing energy consumption amongst its 2,200-strong leases.

The company said that reducing the energy consumption of its pub estate was not only good for the environment but good business practice in the current economic climate.

The Think, Act, Save strategy will focus on the sustainability of energy use, construction, recycling and waste and the impact of the pub supply chain.

S&NPE said that heat and lighting accounts for 30% of all energy usage in leased pubs.

The company has set itself a target to reduce the heating and lighting of external smoking areas by 60% from its current average cost £30 a week.

John Draper, property director at S&NPE said: “We are committed to achieving excellent environment and sustainability standards wherever possible.

“Ensuring all those at the sharp end are armed with the facts and guidance on how to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources is a key element of our strategy.”
