Hotel and restaurant bosses are increasingly looking for attractive people when hiring staff, according to a report just published.
The Industrial Society study found employers were more interested in a person's looks than any skills or experience they might have.
The report, Looking good, sounding right, found the trend was particularly prevalent in service industries such as hospitality, where workers deal directly with the public.
It warns employers not to let their desire for employees who look or sound the part blind them to the importance of equal opportunities or to customer demand for good service.
The research was conducted by Chris Warhurst and Dennis Nickson, of Strathclyde University.
Two years ago they carried out a similar study, inspired by a number of job adverts in Glasgow seeking "attractive", "tasty" and "stylish" staff (Caterer, 18 November 1999, page 4).
