Hospitality figures in 2009 Queens’ Birthday Honours List

Garry Hawkes, one of two hospitality figures to gain a Knighthood

The hospitality industry was well represented in the 2009 Queens’ Birthday Honours List, including two Knighthoods.

Veteran contract caterer Garry Hawkes CBE, was awarded a Knighthood for his services to business and to vocational training.

Hawkes, who was until recently chairman of vocational training body the Edge, is a former president of the British Hospitality Association who worked for Gardner Merchant, Sodexo and Aramark.

William Hastings CBE, chairman of Hastings Hotels, receives a Knighthood for his services to the tourism industry and to the community in Northern Ireland.

Hastings, 80, told the BBC: “I am truly overwhelmed at the enormous honour bestowed on me by the Queen. My wife of 50 years who has always supported me will also receive the title she deserves in becoming Lady Hastings.”

Cookery writer and broadcaster Delia Smith OBE was elevated to the status of CBE for her services to the food industry.

Richard Broyd, chairman of Historic House Hotels, owner of Hartwell House, Bodysgallen Hall and Middlethorpe Hall, was appointed OBE for services to heritage and to conservation.

Historic House Hotels is part of the Pride of Britain consortium, whose chief executive Peter Hancock said: “We have great respect for Mr Broyd and the beautiful properties he has painstakingly restored.”

Andrew Bennett, food and beverage manager at the Park Lane hotel in London was made OBE for services to the hospitality industry and to skills training.

Mike Duckett, catering services manager at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, was appointed MBE for his services to the NHS, while Sally Clarke, owner of Clarke’s restaurant in London’s Notting Hill, was made MBE for services to hospitality

Another MBE appointment was Geetie Singh, owner of the Duke of Cambridge pub in London’s Islington, who was recognised for her services to the organic gastropub trade while Alberto Crisci, catering services manager at High Down prison, was made an MBE for services to the catering industry.

Ken Hom, the Chinese American celebrity chef, was made an honorary OBE - awarded to non-UK nationals - for services to culinary arts.
