Five great weird and wonderful hospitality website and blogs

Friday 15 August 2008 09:00

Caterer takes a look at some of the weird and wonderful website that are currently on the internet.

Whether its the chef database, which aspires to be the chef and restaurant equivalent of the hugely successful movie database website IMBD, the musing of a waiter in New York or you just want to know the history of Michelin-starred restaurants then the web has everything!

Take a look at Caterer's favourite five websites below.

If you have a website that is worth shouting about then why not enter the Caterersearch.com Web Awards. The awards will recognise the best websites in the industry and reward the organisations and individuals involved in designing, managing, marketing or promoting them. The Chef and Restaurant Database
Who says we treat chefs too much like celebs? Well, the fine people at Chef and Restaurant Database might be stumped for an argument. Taking their lead from the Internet Movie Database, they have collected and collated chef and restaurant history for public perusal. Want to know all the Le Gavroche alumni? Want to know where Richard Corrigan has worked? Lose yourself for hours.

Restaurant Alimentum Blog
Reckon you’d be a good restaurateur? Fancy your own little spot. Well, before you start planning the menu and choosing the wallpaper, read owner of Alimentum, in Cambridge, John Hudgell’s blog as he set up and launched the site, and see what you are really in for. Written a couple of year's ago, this blog still provides some useful tips.

History of Michelin starred restaurants
Hidden in the bowels of the Michelin website, their star history can be harder to find than a James Martin fine-dining venture. Lose the link and you can be trawling through the site for says. But its easy reference means you can find out where and when starred venues have popped up. Has Brighton ever had one, you ask? Well yes, says the guide, at Le Francais, from 1975-1978. Wonderful.

Hotel Chatter
Reviews, openings, ratings and chat galore. The pre-eminent blog of the hotel industry.

Waiter Rant
Isn’t freedom of speech great? Mr Waiter Rant starts an angry blog, wins a legion of fans, gets a book deal and gets onto the New York Times bestseller list for non-fiction. All while serving up plates with a fake smile. Hoorah for capitalism and the web, there’s hope for all of us online! Unless you’re called Psycho Chef, whose attempt to emulate Waiter Rant from back of house died after a month. So the lesson? Only blog if you’re funny and not lazy.
