Riot compensation claim deadline extended

Prime Minister David Cameron (pictured) has pledged to extend the deadline before which uninsured businesses which suffered damage during riots across the country can claim compensation.

The deadline for claims under the Riot Damages Act has been extended from 14 days to 42 days following estimates from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that damages totalled £200m.

Also included in a package of measures designed to help businesses recover from the violence and looting in London, Birmingham and Manchester was a £20m High Street Support Scheme to help rebuild affected areas. Local authorities will also have the power to offer business rate relief to affected firms.

Cameron told MPs in the Commons today: "I give the people affected this promise - we will help you repair the damage, get your businesses back up and running and support your communities."
