Café ODE in Devon awarded SRA highest ever rating

The Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) has given its highest ever rating to the Café ODE in Devon.

Sister venue to ODE Dining in in Shaldon, the café has achieved 100% in six of the 14 sections of the SRA's Sustainability Rating, with an overall score of 94%. It has beaten the previous high score of the River Cottage's Plymouth Canteen of 89%.

Café ODE opened in May this year by owners Tim and Clare Bouget with the aim of being the most socially and environmentally responsible restaurant in the country.

The purpose-built café serves local, seasonal food with an emphasis on fish and seafood and the SRA was particularly impressed with its sourcing of locally produced organic vegetables and meat. Café ODE was also praised for its recycling, use of renewable electricity, its grass roof designed to attract wildlife and its commitment to the local community through running cooking classes for schoolchildren and raising money for the local wildlife trust.

Tim Bouget said: "We are so thrilled that all our efforts to make Café ODE as sustainable as possible have been recognised. We are very lucky that the cafe is situated in such a beautiful spot right by the sea, surrounded by fantastic producers. It would be a travesty if we did not take advantage of this great setting and take the opportunity to showcase the amazing available produce to our customers, many of whom really value the integrity of what we are doing."

Mark Linehan, managing director of the SRA, said: "With this outstanding rating, Cafe-ODE has really set a standard to which restaurants across the country can aspire. It's clear that Tim and his team understand the big picture and have a fantastic eye for the detail as well as for innovation and inspiration."
