Chef Shaun Thomson, a Caterer Acorn award winner in launch year 1987, has died aged 43.
Thomson, who counted stints at Boisdale restaurant, the Savoy hotel and the Dorchester hotel on his CV, died after an accident brought on by alcohol abuse. He leaves a wife Abigail and two sons, Christian, 22, and Jamie, 14.
His family wish it to be known that he was an alcoholic and “the misery it brought to the people who cared the most about him”. The family want these details known to encourage anyone with a drink issue to get help before it is too late.
Last year, Caterer launched a campaign highlighting the prevalence of drink and drug abuse in hospitality. It includes advice and links to the Ark Foundation, the education and support service for hospitality workers affected by alcohol and drug problems.
