BBC launches TV search for the Great British Menu

Monday 20 February 2006 09:42
The country's top chefs are going head-to-head in the BBC's latest series, which is designed to establish the greatest British menu.

Over eight weeks, 14 leading British chefs will feature in the series, which will scour the country for the best regional produce to create the perfect four-course menu.

The final dishes, which will be chosen by public vote, will be served to the Queen for her 80th birthday celebrations at London's Mansion House on 15 June.

Chefs taking part will each represent a region of the UK. Lining up in England will be Gary Rhodes and Atul Kochhar for the South-east; John Burton Race and Michael Caines for the South-west; Antony Worrall Thompson and Galton Blackiston for the Midlands and Eastern England; and, in the North, Marcus Wareing and Simon Rimmer.

Angela Hartnett and Bryn Williams will be representing Wales; with Nick Nairn and Tom Lewis cooking for Scotland; and, finally, Paul Rankin and Richard Corrigan for Northern Ireland.

Burton Race said: "The Brits can cook - it's official. I am honoured that this series celebrates that British food has arrived, and very honoured to represent the South-west."

The competition's judges are Prue Leith, Matthew Fort and Oliver Peyton. The Great British Menu series starts on 10 April on BBC2.
