I am surprised that the proprietor of "two busy hotels" (Caterer, 9 March, page 22) seems unable to make his own decision on smoking in bedrooms. It seems he would rather hide behind some sort of united industry group or allow the nanny state to make a decision for him.
We moved to no-smoking bedrooms two years ago, not only because of the potential fire risk but, more importantly, because we wanted all our guests to have clean-smelling rooms. We control it by having a clearly stated policy on our website and a no-smoking notice placed in every bedroom.
Sure, we lost a few regulars at first, but most have returned because they like the value-for-money hospitality we offer.
What are you, Mr Greville Dare, man or mouse? Devise and implement your own policies without asking for even more state interference.
