London has been named as one of the world’s most popular city destinations, leading a global survey on European travel plans and preferences.

The survey, which was conducted by travel website TripAdvisor and questioned more than 2,100 travellers, honoured London with three awards including best European capital for entertainment and nightlife beating Amsterdam and Paris into second and third place respectively.

London was also voted as the most family-friendly European city, beating Italian cities, which have traditionally been voted best in the category.

It also picked up the award for best shopping destination ahead of the French capital Paris.

London came second in the all-time favourite European city category, losing out to Paris, and was also runner up for best city for art and culture.

TripAdvisor European communications manager Ian Rumgay, said: “While the keen rivalry in tourism between London and Paris continues unabated, it would appear that London has shaded it this year by being nominated best or runner-up in many categories.
