Mitchells & Butlers chief executive leaves business in shock departure

Adam Fowle, the chief executive of Mitchells & Butlers, has left the business by mutual consent after two years in the post.

Fowle joined the managed pub chain in 1984, working his way up to managing director of the pubs division. He left to work for Sainsbury's for two years as retail director, before rejoining the pub group in 2005 as business development director.

He joined the Board in October 2007 when he was appointed managing director for restaurants and was named chief executive in 2009.

The company is in the process of recruiting a successor but in the meantime non-executive board director Jeremy Blood will take on the role of interim chief executive. Fowle is expected to remain with the business for a period to ensure an orderly and effective transition.

In a statement, M&B chairman Simon Burke said Fowle leaves the business in much stronger position than when he took over as chief executive and wished him well in the future.

"Adam has made a significant contribution over a number of years to Mitchells & Butlers and in particular in the past two years, developing and leading the strategic change the Company has undertaken whilst maintaining a strong operational performance in challenging conditions," he said.

"Jeremy has significant industry and corporate experience and I look forward to working with him during this interim period."
