Flodigarry Country house hotel

Robin Collins is the new owner of the three-star Flodigarry Country house hotel and adjoining Flora MacDonald’s Cottage on the Isle of Skye.

Local heroine Flora MacDonald – famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from the mainland to Skye after the disastrous Battle of Culloden – lived in the cottage from 1751 to 1759.

The hotel at Staffin, Portree, has an elevated position in the North-east that commands westerly views across the Sound of Raasay to the Applecross hills and the Summer Isles. It has an annual net turnover in excess of £700,000.

The hotel, a former Victorian lodge from 1895 that occupies five acres of grounds, has 18 en-suite bedrooms to sleep 36, including seven in the cottage annexe which is a Category C Historic Scotland-listed building.

Facilities include a 40-seat dining room; a drawing room linked to a 30-seat conservatory; a 40-seat split-level bistro; and two fully-serviced, six-berth caravans for staff.

The hotel and cottage were on the market for a guide price in excess of £1.4m.

The new owner also snapped up two further lots – the adjacent Dun Flodigarry House and a development site of 0.7 acres with planning consent to build additional bedroom suites. They were sold off guide prices of around £375,000 and £75,000 respectively.

Dun Flodigary House is a modern, private three-bedroom house set in 1.4 acres of land that includes a Victorian walled kitchen garden and an 18m x 4.5m polytunnel that supplies the kitchen with fresh vegetables.

The Edinburgh office of Colliers Robert Barry sold the three lots on behalf of Robbie Cairns off a combined asking price in excess of £1.85m.
