Pub managers
The managed sector this year has seen the formation of large pub companies through the acquisition of competitors. Subsequently, disposals and rebranding have been areas of key focus in the sector. Synergy savings have affected the head count from middle management upwards, and redundancies have been inevitable, causing an influx of talent on to the market. The disposal of businesses has also meant the emergence of new employers at unit management level.

Similarly, in the tenanted sector, a series of significant acquisitions have resulted in the emergence of some key national players. Tenanted, leased and franchised pub businesses continue to be a growth area across the UK.

The ongoing switch from managed outlets to tenanted or leased units continues to depress the earnings growth in this sector, as well as restricting candidate movement as a result of lock-in clauses and revised company structures. Consequently, these operations now require fewer managers and, in addition, area managers are frequently now seeing an increase in the number of outlets included in their regions. There has been a corresponding reduction in support function roles as well.

Competition for area management roles is fierce due to the number of companies going through restructuring processes, and this, in turn, is having an impact on the development of unit managers, who have concerns with regard to career progression opportunities.
