BBPA calls for extended opening for Olympics and Diamond Jubilee

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has called on Prime Minister David Cameron to extend pub opening hours for next year's Diamond Jubilee and Olympic celebrations.

The call comes after the success of the Royal Wedding bank holiday celebrations, where pubs saw an estimated £600m boost to takings as Britain partied in the nation's locals.

The BBPA wants ministers to agree to extended hours over the four-day bank holiday in June 2012 and for the opening and closing ceremonies of London 2012.

Brigid Simmonds (pictured), chief executive of the BBPA, said: "Pubs were right at the heart of celebration up and down the country on Royal Wedding day, and the Government deserves credit for the extended opening hours so people could really enjoy the day.

"As everyone turns their minds to next summer's huge celebrations - the Diamond Jubilee and the national showcase that is London 2012 - let's give pubs the chance to play their part in getting the party started."
