Publicans are to miss out on a £100m windfall following England's dramatic exit from the European Championships last week.
The British Beer and Pub Association estimates that publicans In England took £50m of additional turnover during the team's quarter-final match against Portugal - two-thirds more than for any game in the group stages. The findings suggest that publicans would have been set for a bumper pay day had England reached the final.
Moreover, Richard Greenwood, an economist at the Centre for Economics and Business Research, said that some operators might face inventory problems, having overstocked in anticipation of England reaching the final.
And if that wasn't bad enough, hospitality firms may also have been hit by a slump in staff productivity. Research by psychologist group YSC on behalf of event sponsor Canon shows that businesses in England suffered a 41% dip in staff productivity the day after the penalty shoot-out, costing more than half a billion pounds.
