Apetito boss outlines business opportunities from social issues

Balancing sound commercial sense with the wider needs of society is a must for businesses looking to succeed, according to food company Apetito.

At the recent CBI annual conference, Apetito chief executive Paul Freeston explored the vital role that business has to play in tackling the critical economic and social issues the country is currently facing, tying in with the theme of this year's conference, "Good for Business, Good for Britain, Good for Growth".

Focusing on the challenges posed by Britain's ageing population in particular, he urged organisations across all sectors to consider ways in which they can help elderly people stay in their own homes for longer, which will in turn ease the financial pressure on the country's overstretched health and care services.

"The fact that people today are healthier and living longer than ever before is something to celebrate," added Freeston.

"It also creates opportunities and challenges that I believe business can play a leading role in addressing. Business at its best delivers real economic and social progress as well as the economic growth that this country desperately needs.

"By focusing on creating products and services that tackle issues such as elderly malnutrition, I believe that business can deliver real social and economic benefit - as well as generate growth, jobs and, of course, returns to investors."

"Our meals delivery business is just that: a business. But it's about so much more - our 1,000 or so drivers are delivering friendship as well as a meal, and keeping an eye out for areas of concern. From time to time, they have saved lives."
