Nanford Guest House named and shamed

Thursday 17 January 2008 10:00

Nanford Guest House in Oxford has been named and shamed as the UK’s dirtiest hotel by peer review website TripAdvisor.

The property topped this year’s top 10 list of the UK’s grimiest hotels after placing second last year.

Some of the TripAdvisor reviews described the Oxford establishment as “horrendous”, “squalid”, “total and utter dump”, “dirty, smelly and should be shut down”.

In a repeat from last year, four out of the top 10 dirty hotels came from the same hotel group, Britannia Hotels.

Britannia Hotel Stockport dropped from first place last year to third place this year, while Europa Gatwick ranked fourth, and Britannia Hotel Birmingham and Britannia Country House in Manchester came in at number eight and 10 respectively.

Other no-goes were the Manor Court Hotel in London (2); Whiteleaf Hotel in London (5); Park Hotel in London (6); County Hotel in Carlisle (7); and the Eden Plaza Hotel in London (9).

On a brighter note, at the Travellers Choice hotel awards, 14 British hotels collected 20 awards, with Red Carnation’s Chesterfield Mayfair in London taking the laurels for best performing British hotel overall.

The central London hotel ranked in the top 10 for the top 100 luxury hotels worldwide (9) and Europe (6) as well as the top 25 most popular destinations (6).

Today’s Mirror contains a shocking account of how bad Nanford Guest House really is. Have you experience something as bad, or worse? Let us know by e-mailing kerstin.kuhn@rbi.co.uk
