The profile of regular pub goers is set to undergo a major transformation after the English smoking ban comes into effect, as married 40-something women start propping up the bar.

New research by pub company and brewer, Greene King, predicts Britain’s pubs will see a new demographic visiting their smoke-free locals.

The study found that over a third (36%) of women between 45 and 54 currently avoid pubs because of the smoky atmosphere.

However, more than half (54%) plan to visit after the ban comes into play and 80% felt the move would make pubs a more appealing place to socialise.

Families are also expected to become a more familiar sight in the traditional boozer with a third of parents, who would have previously avoided taking their kids to pubs because of the smoke, now planning a visit.

A Greene King spokesman said: “The introduction of the smoking ban looks set to entice a new wave of female customers into pubs across the country with professional women and young families, now keen to visit smoke free pubs to socialise, eat and drink.

“The ban could see pub culture in Britain take on a whole new identity.”
