Oliver and Ramsay on Vocational Rich List

Friday 25 June 2004 15:53
Four hospitality high-flyers were named in this year's City & Guilds Vocational Rich List, down from six last year.

The list ranks the 25 wealthiest people whose fame and fortune was built upon craft skills, such as vocational qualifications or apprenticeships.

Chefs Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, Indian restaurateur Charan Gill and leisure magnate Trevor Hemmings all remained in this year's table.

Those who dropped out were Fish! restaurant chain founder Tony Allan and chef Gary Rhodes.

TV exposure helped boost the bank balances of both Ramsay and Oliver, who shared joint 18th position with four other self-made millionaires.

Oliver, who started with a City & Guilds catering qualification and now owns the Fifteen restaurant, has doubled his fortune to £20m in a year thanks to TV, books, cookware ranges and an advertising deal with Sainsbury's.

Ramsay, who went to Banbury Technical College in Oxfordshire and now heads a growing empire of upmarket restaurants in London, Scotland and Dubai, is also valued at £20m - a sum unchanged since last year.

Gill, the owner of Europe's largest independent chain of Indian restaurants, was ranked 25 on the list and is worth £15m, £3m more than last year. He started as an apprentice in a shipyard at 15.

Trevor Hemmings was again ranked second in the list, boosting his fortune from £400m to £700m.
