Indian restaurant fined £10,000 for overflowing bins

Wednesday 17 October 2007 11:30

An Indian restaurant in Yorkshire has been fined £10,000 for allowing waste bins to overflow outside the premises.

Directors of the Last Viceroy in Horsforth were found guilty of breaching environmental health regulations during a hearing before Leeds magistrates.

The court was told that the restaurant had been previously been given an official warning by environmental health officers over the dangers of leaving waste, especially food waste, outside.

After the case Bradford councillor Steve Smith told local media the fine was a "tough judgement".

But Smith, who has responsibility for environmental enforcement went added: "It is fantastic that the magistrates have shown that they support our efforts to crack down on people who wilfully damage the environment, and have recognised the serious nature of this offence.

"Business owners have a responsibility to ensure they dispose of waste carefully and that it is put in the right containers away from members of the public.

"This result shows that business owners who don't take this responsibility seriously will be dealt a heavy hand by the courts."

None of the directors of the restaurant attended the hearing or were available for comment.
