We need a bed tax champion

So the tourism minister, Shaun Woodward, can't rule out the imposition of a bed tax because "we have to balance the books" (Caterer, 22 June, page 7).

The Government already collects more than £450b a year in taxes, a fair slice of which comes from the operators, employees and customers of the UK hotel industry. Making our service even more expensive by adding another cost can only harm our competitiveness.

If the minister for tourism doesn't see himself as a champion for our industry, why have one?
