Pizza Hut has announced a blanket ban on smoking across its 350 sit-down restaurants in the UK.
It says the move "will protect both customers and staff from the dangers of passive smoking at a time when 80% of UK citizens support smoke-free provision in public places."
Brian Rimmer, operations director, full-service restaurants for Pizza Hut, said: "Pizza Hut strongly believes that families should be able to take time to have a leisurely meal in a restaurant without exposing their children to other people’s smoke.
"It is equally important that our staff can work in a smoke-free environment.
"We feel this is a significant step forward for the UK restaurant industry and hopefully some of our competitors will follow suit in the near future."
Pizza Hut's decision follows the recommendation in June from chief medical officer Dr Liam Donaldson of a total ban on smoking in public places to protect the public from the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Pizza Hut customers will be told of the policy as they enter the restaurant.
The policy has been in place across all sit-down restaurants since 10 August.
