UK hotel general managers are increasingly positive about their hotel’s trading performance for the latter half of 2009, according to the latest Hotel Confidence Monitor by TRI Hospitality Consulting.

More than half (51%) of the 113 general managers surveyed were optimistic looking towards the next three months.

Since January, the proportion of optimistic respondents has risen dramatically, with 48% more upbeat than three months ago, which stands in marked contrast to the 70% who were less optimistic in January.

Jonathan Langston, managing director, TRI Hospitality Consulting said: “There appears to be a feeling amongst hoteliers that the worst could be behind us, with an increasing sense of confidence that we are a step nearer to recovery.”

In terms of occupancy performance, 43% of respondents envisage either growth or no change during the current quarter compared to Q3 2008, but only two in 10 respondents did not project a decline in room rate. A similar number (19%) expect to maintain or increase revenue per available room (revpar).

In July, half of the hoteliers surveyed stated that staffing levels were reduced during Q2 2009, but the outlook appears more optimistic for the third quarter, with 85% of respondents intending to maintain or increase staffing levels.

The Hotel Confidence Monitor by TRI Hospitality Consulting was conducted by e-mail, via an online survey, between 21 and 28 July 2009.
