Question: How many people do Unilever provide medical care for in Kericho?
PG tips and Lipton are leading the Indian tea industry into a more sustainable future through their commitment to use only tea from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms. India is the world’s largest tea producing country and now eight independent tea estates in the Nilgiris district, in the state of Tamil Nadu, are certified. The tea estates cover approximately 3,000 hectares and produce 37,000 tonnes of fresh green leaf on average per year, which is processed into 8,500 tonnes of black leaf, on average per year. Around 3,500 workers, with over 10,000 dependants, will benefit from the Rainforest Alliance Certification™.
The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit conservation organisation that works to conserve biodiversity and protect the rights and welfare of workers, their families and communities. The organisation has more than 20 years of experience in certifying sustainable farming practices in forestry, bananas, coffee and cocoa. In June 2007, Unilever’s Kericho plantation in Kenya became the first ever tea farm to be certified by the Rainforest Alliance.
