Gourmet Burger Kitchen owner Clapham House has become the first restaurant group to join Green500, a carbon management scheme backed by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Green500, administered by the London Development Agency, aims to reduce London’s carbon footprint by 60% by 2025.

Crowne Plaza – The City hotel and sandwich chain Pret a Manger signed up to the scheme last year. Other members include Marks & Spencer, T-Mobile and EDF Energy.

Members are tasked with producing plans to reduce their carbon footprint, which are then reviewed at the year end with an awards ceremony for the most successful.

Johnson said: “This is absolutely cracking news that the Clapham House Group has signed up to the Green500.

“We need even more of London’s prominent organisations like this one to come on board and start receiving support and plaudits for their work to save energy, save money and cut carbon.”

Paul Campbell, chief executive of Clapham House, said the programme would help the group co-ordinate its efforts to become greener as a business.
