Blenheim Palace wins a silver for its green efforts

Blenheim Palace has become the 2,000th member of the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

The Oxfordshire stately home - the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and the ancestral home of the Duke of Malborough - was awarded a silver grading by the tourism body in recognition of its commitment to helping the environment.

Among changes made within Blenheim Palace and its 2,100 acres of parkland has been the introduction of low energy lighting and timers on fountains so they go off at night.

Palace staff have also started using more eco-friendly cleaning products, improved recycling practices and stepped-up support of locally produced foods.

Heather Carter, head of operations at Blenheim Palace, said: “We are very committed to working in a sustainable way and with green issues now very much in the mainstream we have undertaken many important actions in order to improve our environmental and social performance.”

The GTBS is the only certification scheme validated by VisitEngland, the national tourist board.

On Friday, Conservative leader and local MP David Cameron presented the current Duke of Marlborough with a Heritage Tree to mark the Palace’s continued commitment to conservation and the environment.
