Four hotels at the TLH Leisure Resort in Torquay have scooped a selection of green tourism awards.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme awarded gold to the 92-bedroom Toorak Hotel, with the Carlton, Victoria and Derwent hotels all being awarded silver.

Owned by Laurence Murrell, all four hotels share a seven-acre site which includes extensive indoor and outdoor leisure facilities.

As well as adopting green measures involving laundry, waste, recycling and insulation, the Toorak was praised for cultivating a wildflower garden providing a valuable habitat for garden birds, bees and insects.

Inspectors from the Green Tourism Business Scheme were impressed with the commitment from staff to green issues with suggestions such as paperless meetings, a bike rack and the use of Fair Trade products all being followed up.

“This is a real pat on the back for all our staff who have worked so hard at maintaining our green initiatives,” said Toorak general manager Nigel Beck.

“All the hotels have done brilliantly tor reach such a high standard in the awards. It has benefits across the board, to our guests, our staff and, of course, ultimately to our environment.”
