Marriott at Marble Arch recycles bed linen to make bags

The London Marriott hotel at Marble Arch has come up with a novel way to recycle its bed linen by turning it into tote bags to be sold for charity.

Sheets and duvet covers from the four-AA-star, 240-bedroom hotel are collected by Sleeping Bags, a social enterprise which is committed to preserving the environment by producing bags from recycled materials. One king size sheet and duvet cover are used to create 10 bags.

On sale at the hotel for £30, the Marriott-created bags feature a bespoke design, based on the theme "In My Dreams" by artist Vicki Murdoch. Profits from the bags are donated to the homelessness charity St Mungo's.

The hotel's general manager, Govert Deketh said he is delighted to be involved in a project which fulfils so many of Marriott's objectives. "Not only are we diverting waste materials from landfill, but we are also supporting the local art and manufacturing communities and helping London's homeless," he said.

Vanessa Rew, the hotel's director of sales and marketing and Caroline Chanchou, sales and marketing co-ordinator, are seen here with two of the recycled bags.
