Pizza Express opens first restaurant in India
Pizza Express has opened its first restaurant in India, with a new site in Colaba, Mumbai.
The opening comes after a partnership formed last year between PizzaExpress and the Bharti Family Office.
PizzaExpress now plans more openings in the fast-expanding Indian casual dining market.
Following the opening, the restaurant chain now operates in 11 countries and said it was transferring to foreign markets with very little adaptation required.
The other international markets it operates in are Cyprus, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Shanghai and UAE.
Harvey Smyth, chief executive of Gondola Group, which owns the brand, said: "We are hugely excited about the opening of our first restaurant in India. We believe that the Indian casual dining market offers enormous potential for PizzaExpress, and we are delighted to be working in partnership with the Bharti Family Office, which offers essential local expertise.
"Pizzas, based on bread and tomato, sit well with the traditional Indian diet. We have slightly tailored our offer to further appeal to local customers by removing beef from the menu, adding more vegetables, and increasing the spice of some pizzas. We have also devoted a great deal of attention to the design of our new restaurant to ensure that it is a stylish and comfortable environment for customers, using local influences and local materials to create a truly memorable venue."
