Two Brixton late-night venues up for sale
Two late-night venues at St Matthew's Church in London's Brixton have been put up for sale by their owner, Chicks Ltd.
Davis Coffer Lyons is dealing with the sale of Babalou bar, restaurant and club, as well as Mass nightclub, both of which are housed in the 1820s building, while part of the building continues to be run as a place of worship. Both venues have 6am licences across the basement, ground, fourth, fifth and sixth floors.
Mass can accommodate up to 980 people on the fourth floor in two main rooms and has hosted music events from hip hop, R&B and grime to hard house and trance since 1996.
Babalou is located in the crypt of the church, and is a separate business in its own right which can be bolted on to Mass to offer a further 490 capacity. The space, which was previously known as the Bug Bar, provides club and live music nights on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is a bar and restaurant seven days of the week.
Chris Bickle, associate director at Davis Coffer Lyons, said: "These are two landmark venues in one of the most talked-about late-night leisure locations outside of Central London. Both venues offer a wide range of unique, flexible spaces with the benefit of character. Brixton is enjoying the benefits of large-scale urban redesign as well as the recent refurbishment of one of its best-known venues, the Electric (formerly the Fridge). We expect the opportunity to acquire such a striking leisure property will generate a significant amount of interest."
