Concession caterer Peyton and Byrne has added a £38m contract at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew to its burgeoning London portfolio, which includes St James's Park and the National Gallery, Caterer can reveal.

The six-year deal, scheduled to commence 10 May, will see Peyton and Byrne offer more than 1,200 covers to the Gardens visitors at four separate venues on the Unesco World Heritage site.

As well as a family-friendly restaurant and creamery, and two self-service cafés, the caterer will operate a waiter-service restaurant in the Grade I-listed Orangery building. Each venue will undergo complete refurbishment over the first year of the contract.

Peyton and Byrne intends to broaden the food offer with an emphasis on British, seasonal fare including its signature range of freshly baked goods.

Chairman Oliver Peyton, a judge on the BBC's Great British Menu, said: "The sheer scale of the 330-acre gardens is truly impressive and a real thing of beauty. We are unbelievably excited to become a part of one of the world's most important sites for botanical research and to be working with the team at Kew.

"We hope to bring something quintessentially British to the catering, reflecting the gardens' rich 250-year heritage."

The contract at the gardens follows a multimillion-pound win last year to provide services to the British Library estate and marks further growth of Peyton's culinary empire. Peyton and Byrne has concession outlets at the Wallace Collection; the Institute of Contemporary Arts; and the Wellcome Collection, all in London.

Peyton Events, the events arm of the business, has also recently expanded having taken on the catering at Lancaster House and Kew Palace.

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
