Health minister promise to tackle malnutrition in older people

Health Minister Ivan Lewis has promised action to tackle malnutrition in older people.

Speaking last week at the National Association of Care Catering, Lewis committed himself to producing an action plan to tackle the issue.

“In my view, there is no excuse for vulnerable, older people not receiving the food they require and the necessary help to eat that food,” said Lewis.

Issues discussed in relation to an action plan were: raising awareness between nutrition and good health; nutritional standards; streamlining guidance; prioritisation from leaders and managers from both health and social care; training for frontline staff and managers; clearer focus in inspections.

Lewis said he hoped to publish the plan in the summer.

Last year Sutton Liberal Democrat MP Paul Burstow raised an Early Day Motion at Parliament calling on the Government to introduce “enforceable” care home food standards.
