IHG weighs in to support Caterer's Slash VAT campaign

The InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the world's largest hotel company by number of rooms, has thrown its weight behind Caterer and Hotelkeeper's Slash VAT, Boost Business campaign.

Stephen McCall, IHG's managing director, UK and Ireland, is urging the company's 20,000 employees in the UK to sign Caterer and Hotelkeeper's petition calling for a cut in the VAT rate from 20% to 5%.

"Sky-high VAT is costing the British economy tens of thousands of jobs," McCall said. "The UK hotel industry struggles to compete in the international market and domestic tourism has suffered as a result of the recent tax increase. We know that a cut to VAT for our sector would allow Britain's fifth-biggest industry to deliver a jobs-fuelled recovery.

"We are fully behind the SlashVAT Boost Business campaign and call on our 20,000 UK employees and their families to sign the petition. IHG aims to create 3,000 jobs in the UK over the next few years - this number could be much higher with the right signals from government."
