After years of speculation - and some near misses - De Vere Hotels has finally been sold. The buyer is Greenall Whitley, the Warrington-based brewer, for £44.5m. Greenall Whitley clinched the deal after buying 51.2% of the De Vere shares held by chairman Leopold Muller.

lThe first ever Caterer & Hotelkeeper awards, the Cateys, were held at London's Grosvenor House. The winners included: Michel Bourdin, Chef Award; Richard Shepherd, Restaurateur of the Year; Grosvenor House, Hotel of the Year; the Waterside Inn, Bray, Function Menu of the Year; Victor Ceserani, Personality of the Year; Berni Inns, Best Group Marketing Campaign; and D'Artagnan Restaurant, Best Independent Marketing Campaign.
