Michelin-starred restaurant, Midsummer House, has been forced to take foie gras off its menu, following weeks of protests by animal rights groups.

The controversial delicacy was taken off the menu at the Cambridge restaurant last night by chef patron, Daniel Clifford.

The restaurant has been targeted by campaigners and was forced to close its doors on Monday this week following an aggressive act of vandalism on its exterior.

Following a consultation with local police, Clifford adhered to the protestors’ demands.

He said: “For the safety of my staff and customers I feel I have no choice but to give into the demands of the protestors. It is a worrying trend for restaurateurs to be forced into decisions against their will by the illegal behaviour of extremists.”

Monday’s attack was claimed by Animal Liberation Front (ALF) who daubed graffiti on the building’s exterior, glued door locks, and used paint stripper on the window frames and door.

Clifford celebrates 10 years in the kitchen at Midsummer House this year. He won his first Michelin star in 2001, and his second by 2005. He is one of the country’s leading chefs in molecular gastronomy.
