Sodexo has reached financial closure on a €35m (£33m) new schools Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Ireland.

The deal, first announced in 2007, sees Sodexo continue its diversification away from its traditional area of expertise, catering, and is its first PPP contract in the Republic.

Under the 25-year contract Sodexo will look after day-to-day maintenance, cleaning, waste management, energy management, caretaking, building services, pest control and operate a help desk at four new schools in Offaly and Laois.

Jeremy Dicks, managing director at Sodexo Ireland, said: “Sodexo has extensive experience in PPP and PFI projects and is delighted to sign its first deal in Ireland.

“Sodexo will manage all maintenance and caretaking issues, enabling the principal to focus on the academic development of the school and its pupils.”

Sodexo is principal sub contractor to the Macquarie Partnerships for Ireland, which will design, build and operate the schools, which are due to open in 2010.

In Ireland Sodexo employs more than 2,000 people at 200 locations with clients including insurer Allianz, the Central Bank and the Northern Ireland Civil Service.
