Liverpool plans city's first five-star hotel

Liverpool is set to get its first five-star hotel, after plans to convert the former Barclays bank site on Water Street were approved by the city’s council last night.

Details of the development remain limited but the approved plans involve turning the Grade II listed building into a 138 bedroom hotel with “associated facilities”. It’s possible these may include an ‘urban spa’, fine dining facilities and penthouse rooms.

Four floors in the nine-storey property are currently rented office space and these will remain in use, with the hotel taking over the unused lower and upper levels.

Speculation that the site may become a Waldorf Astoria has previously been dismissed but it is still not known which hotel company will take on the property once its renovation is completed.

Developers Castlewood Property Management submitted the application.
