Large numbers of staff at the Four Seasons Park Lane are facing up to the prospect of redundancy ahead of a planned 18-month closure for refurbishment on 30 September, Caterersearch has learnt.

The five-star hotel has confirmed that it is currently in a 90-day employee consultation period with its staff, due to end next month, three months ahead of the closure, but said it was unable to comment further on the number of redundancies.

The Four Seasons, which employs approximately 330 staff, has invited 52 hotel and hospitality companies to a jobs fair to find alternate employment for employees.

Redundancies at the Four Seasons Park Lane follow in the footsteps of the Savoy hotel, which closed for a £100m 16-month refurbishment in December 2007. It had found alternative work for 97% of its 500 staff before the closure as it could not afford to keep them on the payroll.

John Stauss, Caterer Hotelier of the Year 2005, is regional vice-president of Four Seasons Hotels and the general manager of the Four Seasons Hotel London.
