Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell yesterday (19 July) launched the widest ever consultation of the tourism industry, in a bid to maximise the benefits of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Unveiled at the first 2012 UK Business Conference in Leeds Town Hall, the consultation is aimed at everyone from small bed and breakfast owners to large hotel chains and public sector organisations.

It aims to ensure the UK markets itself effectively to both the international and domestic audience, that the quality of services provided are of the highest standard, and that the industry’s interests are represented in all decisions.

Jowell said: “Tourism is one of our biggest industries and the Olympics are the biggest sporting event in the world. Put them together and you’ve got a unique opportunity to take our tourism industry to the next level.”

The culture secretary added that she wanted everyone working in tourism to tell the Government what they can do to ensure the UK reaps every conceivable benefit of hosting the games possible.

Consultation Welcome Legacy sets out 21 questions to answer. The closing date is 17 November.
