The five-AA-star, 330-bedroom Celtic Manor Resort has completed nearly £900,000-worth of investment in improving the property ahead of hosting the Ryder Cup in October.

After already spending more than £20m in building the Twenty Ten Course and Clubhouse for the forthcoming golf tournament, the resort has just opened Olive Tree Garden Room (pictured), a children's adventure playground and toddlers' park, and a major extension to the existing Barbecue Pavilion.

The Olive Tree Garden Room, next to the Olive Tree Restaurant, provides space for an additional 120 covers at breakfast, and will also be used for functions. Featuring a multi-deck system, the children's playground measures 500sq m and offers a range of adventure trail activities.

Meanwhile, the extension to the Barbecue Pavilion includes a roof which will allow barbecues to be held in all weathers.

The new developments have been introduced in response to a strong growth in leisure booking during the recession.

"We are intent on stepping up our offering for families and leisure guests," said Celtic Manor's vice-president of operations, Ian Edwards. "Focusing on the leisure business has helped to build our customer base for the future and we will continue to invest in our services to ensure visitors are provided with the best facilities possible.

"The new developments prove our commitment to all sides of the business, both in advance of the Ryder Cup and after the event."

Celtic Manor Resort has also this year introduced flat-screen televisions in its 330 bedrooms and 70 bedrooms of the adjacent 19th-century Manor House, and has acquired nearby country inn the Newbridge on Usk.
