The number of hotel roomnights booked electronically in Europe increased by almost 6% in the three months to the end of September, according to the latest figures from electronic marketing firm Travelclick.
Average daily room rate grew by 6% during the period, to US$161.62 (£96.10).
London topped the list of European cities in terms of the number of roomnights booked via both Global Distribution Systems (GDS) and key Internet sites, with 651,030 nights - an increase of 7.8% on the same period in 2002. Spanish capital Madrid showed the greatest increase in room night bookings, however, up by almost 14% to 106,123.
Paris, Frankfurt and Amsterdam all recorded declines in the number of room nights booked electronically, falling by 2.7%, 1.3% and 4.4% respectively.
The largest increase in average room rate was recorded in Stockholm, where it grew by 10.6% to US$170.81 (£101). Despite having the highest room rate in Europe, average rate in London fell by 0.8% to US$200.92 (£119).
Jan Tissera, vice-president of international sales at Travelclick, said: "Gateway cities such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris continue to be negatively impacted by economic challenges affecting corporate travels, especially from the USA.
"Meanwhile, the increase in intra-European travel has contributed to the positive room night growth for Madrid, Brussels, Barcelona and Stockholm. Based on recent trends, we're optimistic that more markets will experience gains in the fourth quarter."
