Leading chef killed in car accident

Sheffield chef Wayne Bosworth has been killed after his Subaru car careered off a road and into a wall late on Wednesday night.

Police have been told that a car travelling in the opposite direction had its headlights on full beam at the time.

Bosworth, 36, was taken to Sheffield Northern General Hospital with head and internal injuries and died in the early hours of yesterday morning.

He had left the Peacock hotel at Owler Bar, near Sheffield, at just after 11pm and was travelling to his 40-seat Rafters restaurant, in Sheffield, which he owned with his brother Jamie.

Two months ago the brothers took over the 60-seat restaurant at the Peacock, which is owned by Dave Neville and his wife Barbara.

Mr Neville said: "He was a fabulous chef. He will be sadly missed."

Restaurant manager Paul Wilson added: "He was a good friend who thrived on success. I have known him for about 10 years and I used to idolise him."

Bosworth trained at Granville College in Sheffield. From there he worked at the Caledonian and Grosvenor hotels in Edinburgh and then spent three years at the Savoy in London, working under Anton Edelmann.

He also worked at Odette's restaurant in London, before returning to Sheffield to the Charnwood Hotel.

Bosworth and his brother opened Rafters seven years ago. The restaurant has a Bib Gourmand in the latest Michelin guide.

The brothers were expanding their business interests and in addition to the Peacock had just won the franchise to run a café and restaurant in Sheffield's botanical gardens.

Family friend David Baldwin, owner of Baldwin's Omega, a 300-seat restaurant and banqueting suite in Sheffield, said of Wayne: "He was a leading light. We all feel someone has turned the light off and we are in darkness."

The funeral is expected to be held in Sheffield next Thursday.

Bosworth leaves a wife, Joanne and two daughters, Daniella and Sadie.
